We all know the challenge: many colleagues are involved in spending decisions but don’t always have a full understanding of procurement requirements or when procurement input is needed to ensure better outcomes, stronger compliance, and more effective use of public money.
To help tackle this, the Government Commercial College (GCC), as part of their Procurement Capability Programme, has launched the Procurement Awareness module. Procurement professionals are encouraged to share the module widely and use it as a practical tool to support better engagement across their organisations.
What’s it about?
The Procurement Awareness module is a short, standalone course designed for people who don’t work in procurement but are involved in spending public money. This might include:
- Leaders and managers
- Budget holders
- Project and policy colleagues
- Anyone involved in commissioning or purchasing decisions
The aim is simple: help people understand the basics of public sector procurement, when the rules apply, and when they should ask for help.
What are the Learning Outcomes?
By the end of the module, learners will be able to:
- Understand what procurement is and why procurement awareness is important when spending public money.
- Recognise when procurement legislation applies and recall key principles and obligations.
- Identify when to seek support and guidance from procurement or commercial colleagues within your organisation.
For procurement teams, that means earlier conversations, fewer surprises, and better‑informed internal customers.
This UK Government developed training supports general understanding of public procurement but does not cover Welsh specific requirements under the Public Procurement (Wales) Regulations 2024. Please consult your organisation’s procurement colleagues for further guidance.
How to access it
The module is hosted on the Government Commercial College platform – Course: Procurement Capability Programme for public sector employees.
Public sector learners will need a Government Commercial College account to access the training. If they do not already have one, they will need to register here to access the training.
